Assistant News Editor
The News Desk is The Crimson White’s largest desk, so the news editor needs more than one assistant. The assistant news editors will divide up responsibilities for stories by topic, with one assistant taking responsibility for all off-campus stories and beats (including localized national stories) and the other taking responsibility for on-campus stories and beats. The News desk will cover events, meetings, lectures, SGA, UA administrative issues, state and local politics, the continuing efforts to rebuild after the April 27 tornado and more.
Position: Paid
The Assistant News Editors will:
- Aid the news editor with assigning all news stories (about 40) every week.
- Aid the news editor with coordinating the work of 9 paid reporters and about 20 contributing writers
- be in the newsroom daily to read and edit news stories as they come in on deadline (4 p.m.)
- perform day-to-day tasks related to helping news reporters get the information they need, etc.
This position requires:
- strong sense of news value (that is, knowing how to rank stories by relevance to the readership)
- the ability to to work as a team member with the News Editor
- prior reporting experience and proficiency (benefits from a strong portfolio of clips)
