News Editor
The News Editor will work with two assistants to come up with 10 story ideas per day, assign them to reporters and see that each story comes in on deadline every production day at 4 p.m. The News desk will cover events, meetings, lectures, SGA, UA administrative issues, state and local politics, the continuing efforts to rebuild after the April 27 tornado and more.
Position: Paid
The News Editor will:
- be ultimately responsible for assigning all news stories (about 40) every week.
- be in the newsroom daily to read and edit news stories as they come in on deadline (4 p.m.)
- assist the Production Editor in maintaining beats, ensuring that stories don’t drop and editing stories daily
- perform other day-to-day tasks related to helping news reporters get the information they need, etc.
This position requires:
- strong sense of news value (that is, knowing how to rank stories by relevance to the readership)
- the ability to to work as a team leader with the two assistant news editors
- prior reporting experience and proficiency (benefits from a strong portfolio of clips)
